Labor Support Specialist
Target Audience
Any RN or LPN:
-Working with laboring women
-Interested in becoming a specialist in labor support and learning
strategies to improve labor progress and enhance the birthing process
-Who teaches childbirth education
-Who wants to become a Certified Labor Support Specialist (CLSS)
Certification Requirements
-Must be an LPN or RN
-Complete questionnaire (sent at time of registration)
-Attend 2 day PCE Labor Support Specialist course
-Pass a certification examination based on information covered in
the course
This 2 day certification program will cover pertinent topics
such as:
-The effect of labor support on the birthing process
-Understanding the components of labor physiology
-Non-pharmacological strategies and comfort measures for the first
stage of labor including positioning, birth ball, relaxation techniques,
emotional support, aromatherapy, acupressure and reflexology
-Supporting the labor partner
-Managing back labor
-Managing labor dystocia and giving support in difficult labors
-Supporting the patient with an epidural
-Techniques to enhance labor progress in the first and second stage
-Applying evidence based practice to second stage
-Cesarean section
-Rehearsing labor support skills in a simulated labor
Program Hours
Each program day will start at 8:30 AM and run to 4:30 PM - includes
continental breakfast. Comfortable clothing is recommended.
Faculty
This PCE course is taught by a labor support specialist, experienced
in working with midwives and physicians, who has personally used
innovative strategies to assist and support laboring women in many
different settings.
Continuing Education Credit
Our faculty is dedicated to quality continuing education for nurses
by meeting or exceeding the competencies and program guidelines
for perinatal education as determined by AWHONN. This program for
16 hours has been approved by the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association,
which is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing
by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
"Provider is approved by the California Board of Registered
Nursing, Provider Number CEP 13154 for 16 contact hours."
Tuition Cost
The complete certification course is $375.00 which includes the
$75.00 non-refundable registration fee. Tuition must be paid in
full 3 weeks prior to start of course. Add an additional $25.00
for late registration.
Refunds and Cancellations
To receive a refund (does not include non-refundable $75.00 registration
fee) cancellation must be received in writing at least three (3)
weeks prior to scheduled course date. PCE will accept substitutions
for registrants only if the PCE office is notified at least 5 days
prior to the course. PCE reserves the right to cancel courses due
to insufficient registration or other circumstances beyond our control.
A full refund will be given (course tuition only) if such a cancellation
does occur.
Recertification
PCE certification is valid for 3 years. Applicant must obtain 18
contact hours of continuing education credit in maternal child health
in order to receive recertification.
