Independent Study Labor Doula
Target Audience
Any RN or LPN:
-interested in learning more about labor support
-who wants to become a Certified Labor Doula
Course Requirements
In order to become a labor support doula through this program, applicants must
meet the following five requirements:
-Must be an LPN or RN
-Must complete required readings in the books provided, "The Birth Partner,
The Nurturing Touch at Birth," and "Preparing for Labor and Birth"
-Must view the films provided, "Special Women" and "Positioning
for Labor and Birth"
-Must complete study module
-Must complete final certification examination at home within 6 months of receiving
Independent Study packet
-Must pass final certification exam with grade of 80% or better
In order to enroll in this program, candidates must submit the following completed
application along with the $375.00 program fee. PCE supplies PCE program manual,
books, VHS videos and study module. The final examination will be forwarded
to the participant upon the completion and return of study module to PCE. Successful
candidates receive 18 ceu's, may use the designation Certified Labor Doula
(CD) and also becomes a member of the PCE organization.
Course Content
This certification program covers relevant topics such as:
-The role of the doula and the impact on the birth experience
-The nurse's role vs. the doula's role
-Labor physiology
-Pain dimensions
-Comfort measures
-Non-pharmological pain management
-Dealing with labor dystocia, epidurals and difficult labors
-Labor support of the second stage
-Dealing with unexpected outcomes
-Setting up a labor support practices
Continuing Education Credits
Successful candidates receive 18 contact hours. "Provider is
approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP
13154 for 18 contact hours."
Tuition Cost
The complete certification course is $375.00 which includes PCE
manual, books, VHS videos, study modules and certification exam.
Refunds
No refund issued after course material sent.
Recertification
PCE certification is valid for 3 years. Applicant must obtain 18
ceu's in maternal child health to receive recertification.
