Independent Study for Experienced Childbirth Educator
Target Audience
Any RN or LPN:
-interested in teaching childbirth education
-who wants to become a Certified Childbirth Educator (CCE)
Certification Requirements
Applicants must meet the following five requirements:
-must be a RN or LPN with a minimum of 1 year verified teaching
experience
-must complete required readings (requires textbook purchase - "Childbirth
Education: Practice, Research and Therory" 2nd edition) and
study modules
-must view the DVD provided, "Positions for Labor and Birth"
-must complete final certification examination at home within 6
months of receiving Independent Study packet
-must pass final certification exam with grade of 80% or better
In order to enroll in this program, candidates must verify that
they have taught formal childbirth education in a group setting
with a letter from their supervisor (or equivalent), whose phone
number must be included. PCE supplies program book, DVD and study
modules; participants must provide their own textbook, "Childbirth
Education: Practice, Research and Therory" 2nd edition (2000)
by F. Nichols & S. Humenick. Textbook can be purchased through
PCE for $70.00 (shipping fees are waived if purchased with the initial
program). The final examination will be forwarded to the participant
upon the completion and return of study modules to PCE.
Course Content:
This certification program covers relevant topics such as:
-History and methods of childbirth education
-Pain management theories
-Coping techniques including various relaxation methods, breathing
patterns, and comfort measures
-Prenatal exercises
-Pushing techniques
-Role of the labor support person
-Teaching strategies
-Adult learning theory applied to childbirth education
-Curriculum development
-Childbirth education as a business
Continuing Education Credit
Successful candidates receive 16 ceu's. "Provider is approved
by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP
13154 for 16 contact hours."

The complete certification course is $375.00.

Recertification
PCE certification is valid for 3 years. Applicant must obtain 18
contact hours of continuing education credit in maternal child health
to receive recertification.
