Independent Study Breastfeeding Counselor
Target Audience
Any RN LPN or GN:
-working with lactating women
-interested in obtaining accurate, current information about lactation management
-who wants to become a Certified Breastfeeding Counselor (CBC)
-preparing to become a board certified lactation consultant
Certification Requirements
Applicants must meet the following five requirements:
-must be an RN, LPN or GN
-must complete required readings in the textbook provided, "Breastfeeding
the newborn: clinical strategies for nurses"
-must complete study modules
-must complete final certification examination at home within 6
months of receiving Independent Study packet
-must pass final certification exam with grade of 80% or better
In order to enroll in this program, candidates must submit a completed
application along with the $375.00 program fee. PCE supplies program
manual, textbook and study modules. The final examination will be
forwarded to the participant upon the completion and return of study
modules to PCE. Successful candidates may use the designation Certified
Breastfeeding Counselor (CBC) and also become members of the PCE
organization.
Course Content
This certification program covers relevant, research-based topics
such as:
-The role of the healthcare professional
-Anatomy and physiology of the breast
-Latch on and suck assessment
-Guidelines for the first week
-Nutritional needs of the nursing dyad
-Management of common problems
-Special needs such as prematurity, multiples, cleft lip/palate,
neurological problems, relactation
-Medications
-Lactation gadgets
-Empowering women and their infants
Continuing Education Credits
Successful candidates receive 16 contact hours. "Provider
is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing,
Provider Number CEP 13154 for 16 contact hours."
Tuition Cost
The complete certification course is $375.00 which includes program
book, textbook, study modules and certification exam.

No refunds issued after course materials have been shipped.
Recertification
PCE certification is valid for 3 years. Applicant must acquire 18
contact hours of continuing education credit related to maternal
child health with at least 6 ceu's pertaining to lactation management
for recertification.
