Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PCE's certifications
and certifications through other companies? Why do PCE seminars
take only two days?
We certify only professional nurses. Because of this common background, there's
no need to spend time covering information that nurses already know as some
of our competitors do. PCE's policy of limiting class size to small groups
allows a flexible, more individualized course that can move at a faster pace.
What are the assignments that must be completed for the childbirth
educator and breastfeeding counselor courses?
PCE's programs are interactive workshops. In preparation for discussion in
each course, every participant is asked to write two essays and bring them
to the program. Specific details and instructions are sent in the registration
packet. The assignments can usually be done in one or two evenings.
What does it mean to complete a series of childbirth classes as a
requirement for the childbirth educator course?
PCE requires that each participant audit a series of childbirth classes at
a location convenient to them. The participant should critique the class observing
teaching strategies, icebreakers and classroom interaction. PCE does not require
written verification of class attendance.
If I am an experienced childbirth educator, do I have to observe
a childbirth series?
No, this requirement is waived for experienced instructors since they are already
familiar with classroom dynamics.
I attended a childbirth series with my own pregnancy. Must I observe
another series?
Yes, because an expectant parent has a much different focus. You will be required
to observe the course from a teacher's perspective.
What is the difference between the labor
doula and labor support specialist certification courses?
Both courses are targeted at nurses wanting to learn the "tricks of the
trade" for labor support. The labor support specialist certification's
main focus is for the nurse who works in the labor and delivery/maternity field
who does not intend to set up a doula business. The labor doula course has
an additional focus of going into business and setting up a doula practice.
What is the difference between a breastfeeding
counselor, breastfeeding educator, lactation educator and a board
certified lactation consultant?
All denote a specialization in the field of lactation management: the the first
three are roughly equivalent. However, to become a board certified lactation
consultant you must meet all the International Board of Lactation Consultant
Examiners (IBLCE) requirements for education and clinical practice in lactation
management prior to taking their exam, which is offered once yearly. PCE's
breastfeeding counselor certification course can be a stepping stone in this
process, offering 16 L-cerps (IBLCE's continuing education units). See the
IBLCE web site for further details on becoming a board certified lactation
consultant.
Do I qualify for a multiple course discount
if I sign up for a certification seminar and an independent study
course at the same time?
Yes.
